We love illustrating books, especially when they’re colourful, meaningful children’s books that allow us to work in our favourite styles. We’ve worked with Dr Tamara Pizzoli and The English Schoolhouse publishing house for several years now, on so many children’s book illustration collaborations that we’ve almost lost count. We are big believers in Tamara’s mission to diversify children’s literature and provide representation for young people, and we love being able to contribute our illustration to her cause and bring life to her words.
One of our earliest projects with Tamara and The English Schoolhouse was Auntie Nappy: Lessons From The Beautiful Life Patterns Made by Nefeterius Akeli McPherson. Nefeterius was Tamara’s 39 year old fabulous, smart, and wildly capable big sister, who passed away suddenly after a long battle with a rare genetic liver disease and being diagnosed with cancer. Tamara wrote the resulting book to explain just how much her two sons’ aunt, Auntie as they call her, accomplished while alive. The book also attempts to address the concept of the cycle of life and death to a young audience. We contributed both children’s book illustration and book design for this project.
We were honoured to be entrusted with such a personal project for Tamara and The English Schoolhouse, and are so happy that we could deliver illustrations that did justice to her beautiful words. If you’re looking for illustration for your children’s book, we would love to hear from you.
