At Howell Edwards we absolutely love illustrating books, especially when they’re colourful, meaningful children’s books. We’ve been really privileged over the past few years to work on some really emotionally important books for children; it’s an incredible honour to be chosen by an author to bring life to their words, and we take it seriously.
One of the most touching and poignant books we’ve worked on is The Cloud Diary, by Tony Gilbert. The book is a moving short story about a young boy dealing with the loss and grief of losing his mother, exploring themes of death and bereavement. We were commissioned to design and illustrate the cover, as well as illustrations for the inside of the book, detailing different aspects of the short story.
We used soft, toned down colours across our illustrations to provide a more gentle feel to the work, whilst still keeping a cheerful, comforting palette. It was really important to us to design a book that was appealing and heartwarming for children who were potentially in the same position as the character in the book, and to provide justice to Tony’s beautiful words. The book is available for purchase on Amazon, and 50% of all sales go to Winston’s Wish, a charity providing support to children and young people after the loss of a parent.
If you’re looking for an illustrator for a children’s book, we would love to hear from you.
