At Howell Edwards, we like to try to regularly work with our local art institutions and keep up to date with and a part of our local art and design scene. Whether it’s web design, graphic design, or illustration, we’re always looking for new ways to integrate with galleries and publications, especially in our local area and around Essex.
We worked with our local arts centre, Firstsite, for a period of a year to redesign and develop their exhibition programmes and marketing materials. We were particularly excited about the challenge as the visual programme designs and promotional ephemera allowed us to use nearly every string of our bow, from graphic design to illustration, from typography to art-working.
Firstsite’s mission to make contemporary art relevant to everyone is close to our heart, and we’ve loved working with them on marketing for their programme of work – including projects, exhibitions, and publications by established and emerging artists, as well as extensive learning opportunities and artists’ support initiatives. Firstsite aim to inspire the public through art, in the process contributing to our region’s well-being, learning, and economy. Some recent favourites include their Pixar film festival and their Open Exhibition 2016, encouraging members of the public of all artistic abilities to contribute.
The previous designs for the Firstsite catalogues and posters were cluttered and hard to read. We took a new, simplified design direction to ensure that their materials were eye-catching and visually stunning, but communicated a clear message without being overstimulating. We loved working with the bright colours and powerful typography of the Firstsite branding, and seamlessly adding our own touch with digital illustration.
We also worked with the Curation teams to design window and wall vinyls for exhibitions, events, and workshops. The curved walls of the golden crescent building that Firstsite now resides in posed a new and unique challenge to us, and one that we thoroughly enjoyed accomplishing.
We really enjoyed working with Firstsite, and being a part of our local artist community. If you’re looking for design or illustration for an installation or exhibition, we’d love to hear from you.
